Beautiful Liar - Beyonce feat. Shakira [B'day]
Beyoncé has stated that the song is about female empowerment, keeping with the theme of the album. The protagonists sing about being charmed by the same man. Instead of fighting over him, they decide not to start a drama or waste their time.
The original Spanglish version featured Beyoncé singing solo, and this leaked onto the internet in late 2006. However the duet version was recorded (in separate languages for the two different language versions) on January 23 2007 in Miami. By February 27, 2007 it had leaked on to the Internet. The single started playing on the radio just after the video was premiered on MTV's Total Request Live & BET's 106 and Park on Wednesday, February 28, 2007. It premiered on the same day as Beyoncé's other single, Upgrade U.
The duet had been confirmed by Beyoncé in an interview with Univision in December 2006. In an MTV interview she described how she had met Shakira several times at various awards shows over recent years and had often planned to perform a duet. After recording the latin-themed song solo, she approached Shakira to appear on it. Shakira willingly accepted, citing mutual respect for Beyoncé.
